The first experimental mode will arrive at the beginning of the season and will prioritize player versus environment content with a light touch of player versus player elements. The second mode, arriving in the middle or latter half of the season, will be strictly player versus environment. This second mode focuses on crews completing objectives together to make progress across matches.

Sony reported that Marathon's initial release delivered disappointing results. The poor performance prompted Sony to record an impairment charge exceeding $700 million. This financial hit impacted PlayStation's quarterly operating income, causing it to drop below a 10% margin for the fiscal year 2025 period.

Bungie's other live service title, Destiny 2, may also be struggling on the PC platform. SteamDB data indicates that Destiny 2's daily player base on hovers around 10,000 to 11,000 users. The company acknowledges the missteps with Marathon but remains optimistic about turning things around through continued adjustments.
