Modder postmemetic has released the first version of Duke-RT, a modification for Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour. This project introduces a new ray-tracing render backend based on NRI. The modder developed Duke-RT as a fork of the existing Raze engine to bring modern rendering techniques to the classic title.

The core renderer supports modern graphics APIs, including full compatibility with D3D12. Duke-RT implements Super Resolution to help maintain frame rates during intensive rendering. The update also adds support for Ray Reconstruction to improve image quality in ray-traced scenes. Users must own a legitimate copy of Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour to use this modification.

Modder brings modern ray-tracing tech to classic FPS

The modder has already remastered Episode 1 of the game using physically based rendering materials. This update allows players to experience the iconic first-person shooter with ray-traced lighting. The fork focuses primarily on path tracing capabilities to enhance the visual fidelity of the game world. The current release represents a significant step forward in visual upgrades for the series.

Duke-RT remains a work in progress as the development continues. Episodes 2 and 3 of the game are not yet finished and are not included in this initial release. The developer plans to add volumetrics, such as rocket smoke, in future versions of the mod. Players interested in these advanced effects will need to wait for subsequent updates.
