Apple Music’s 404 page has a playable version of the original iPod now. As a nostalgic tribute to the 25th anniversary of the iPod, Apple has put an interactive version of their first iPod for people to play with on their 404 page. Not only is this Easter egg super cool and fun to use, it's playable exactly on the day the first iPod was announced! Which was Oct 23, 2001.
Interactive replica includes hidden Brick game and music previews
The virtual iPod is a replica of the original iPod. From the scroll wheel, black and white screen, and the familiar menus of Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Settings, it feels just like the real deal 2001 iPod! You can interact with the virtual iPod just as you would with the original 2001 iPod, making it a great retro experience right from your modern day web browser. This web app was created by Apple to commemorate the legacy of iPod products, with the last product ending in May 2022.
- Storage: 5 GB
- Original Price: $399
- Release Date: November 10, 2001
- Discontinuation Date: May 10, 2022
There’s also a virtual version of the 'Brick' game (a classic Breakout-style arcade game) that can be found in the About screen of the virtual iPod. The virtual version of the game can be started by holding on the wheel for 5 seconds. The music simulation uses normal 30 or 90 second preview clips for songs, following Apple’s 2010 preview rules. It’s all free to use, you don't need to have an active Apple Music subscription to use or interact with it.
The original iPod was released November 10, 2001 with 5GB for $399. It changed the world of digital music. The interactive 404 page is Apple Music’s way to honor the original hardware that started the digital music revolution, while also helping to transition to the current Apple Music streaming service.
It's a cool way to archive something so that new users can have a sense of what an iPod interface was like. A device that truly changed the game.
