The dangerous possibility of melting the connector has always been there for the high-end graphics cards and that's due to erratic power delivery. Super Flower tried to solve this problem with the help of a new hardware accessory that monitors and secures this connection. They've come up with the VGA 12+4 pin OCP Dongle.

New hardware accessory monitors current and forces black screen to prevent melting

This small piece of hardware is placed right between the graphics card and the power supply cable. It monitors the electrical current in real-time. It's definitely a handy tool that offers the end-user direct control over the possibility of causing damage to the hardware.

Specifications

  • Alert Threshold (Orange): 9.5A to 12A
  • Alert Threshold (Red): Above 12A
  • Protection Trigger Time: 195 seconds
  • Protection Action: VGA Black Screen Protection

The Super Flower VGA 12+4 pin OCP Dongle sits between the graphics card and the power supply cable.

What the new OCP Dongle does, is basically a current monitor inline for the 12V-2×6 pin standard used on modern GPU's. The device monitors the amperage over every pin to notice hazardous spikes of current. The dongle was paired with some power supply units for optimal compatibility, by Super Flower. They've launched it in order to offer an actual solution for this problem that affects both and hardware.

Power supply related issues can be noticed and addressed by this dongle in a very straightforward way. A visual and audible signal will be used to warn the end-user about issues. When any pin would use between 9.5A and 12A, the dongle will start buzzing and it will light up with an orange light.

If that amperage goes over 12A, the light becomes red and the alarm won't stop buzzing. Thanks to this, we can immediately see if there are erratic power supply issues. One that could cause literal damage to the connector.

The dongle will activate the VGA Black Screen Protection mode after 195 seconds of high current levels. This means the output for the display will black out, essentially turning the system off. This is a way to buy time for safely shutting down the computer before any melting starts on any component. The dongle is a valuable safety tool that can be utilized for systems with high-end graphics cards.

For now, Super Flower has decided to market this dongle only in the Taiwan market. You can only get it when it comes paired with some Super Flower power supply units. So, people outside of that market can't easily access this accessory. It's one of the different attempts of stabilizing the 12V-2×6 pin connector interface.
