EA is taking the official servers for Need for Speed (2015) offline, effectively cutting the game off from any online infrastructure. This decision cuts off players from the multiplayer and cloud services. Luckily, community group afterhours-crew is coming to the rescue for single-player players. They've found a way for you to still play the game without being connected to the EA servers.
afterhours-crew releases open-source server replacement for the 2015 racing title
Afterhours-crew built an emulator for the game's servers called 'afterhours 2015'. It's a replacement for the original servers. The emulator effectively functions as a local server host for the game.
In turn, you get access to those things that normally need to connect to EA servers. These things range from local accounts to free roam and even garage access. Local saves are also possible. The saving itself is limited to partial saves.
Source code for the server emulator has been made available by the afterhours-crew team. They've uploaded the code to GitHub. This way others can take a look inside and possibly improve on the emulator.
Interestingly, it looks like AI was used for the development. 'Claude' is one of the listed contributors. The code is a good replacement for the now offline EA services.
Community development can really help games that are otherwise dead. It means that if you have a copy of Need for Speed (2015) you can now play it offline thanks to this emulator. The multiplayer doesn't work, but the single-player is still accessible. It's a nice way of dealing with the server shutdown.
