Three classic Xbox 360 exclusives are now playable on modern PCs, offering fans a way to experience these titles without legacy hardware. Burnout Revenge, Ace Combat 5, and Midnight Club: Los Angeles have received unofficial ports that bypass the original console restrictions. This development matters because it removes the barrier of owning obsolete gaming consoles for these specific legacy titles.

Three Xbox 360 exclusives bypass legacy hardware barriers via Vulkan and recompilation

The ports for Burnout Revenge and Midnight Club: Los Angeles utilize the Xbox 360 Native Ports initiative. This project employs a Vulkan renderer to handle graphics and a native audio path to manage sound. These technical choices allow the games to run on current PC architectures without relying on traditional console emulation layers.

Ace Combat 5 takes a different technical approach by using a static recompilation method. A Python tool reads the original game files and converts each function into C code ahead of time. GCC then compiles this generated code to run on the PC. The game features native 3D graphics with vertex shaders, mipmapped textures, and anisotropic filtering, avoiding an emulated Graphics Synthesizer.

A separate project called FreeBurn is currently developing an unofficial PC port for Burnout Revenge. This version uses a modern renderer that adds ambient occlusion, dynamic lighting, and dynamic shadows. These enhancements also enable a new time-of-day system that was not present in the original release. The project has already surpassed the Xbox 360 version in some visual areas.

All three games are available for download globally right now. Burnout Revenge and Midnight Club: Los Angeles are playable with the Xenia Canary emulator. There is currently no estimated release date for the completion of the FreeBurn project. Players can access the existing ports immediately while awaiting further updates on the enhanced Burnout Revenge version.
