Valve released two new software updates for SteamOS that address stability and performance issues affecting handheld gaming devices. These fixes matter because they resolve crashes on compatible hardware and correct visual glitches that disrupt gameplay. Users running the Steam Deck or Legion Go 2 should install these updates to avoid unexpected interruptions.
Valve addresses Legion Go 2 crashes and high fan speeds in new update
SteamOS 3.9.1 Preview and SteamOS 3.8.27 Beta both target core system stability. The updates address a specific bug where fan speed reverts to BIOS control, which causes abnormally high fan noise. This issue affects both the Steam Deck and other compatible systems until a reboot occurs.
The 3.9.1 Preview update includes several critical fixes for specific hardware configurations. It resolves a system crash that occurs when launching Forza Horizon 6 on the Legion Go 2. The update also corrects low frame rates on certain external displays and fixes suspend and resume issues on RDNA1 and RDNA2 GPUs.
Additional changes in the 3.9.1 Preview version fix a regression in the boot sequence. The fix ensures the boot logo appears correctly before the Steam startup animation. It also resolves an issue where verbose-mode boot output was hidden by plymouth. Valve also updated the included renderdoc version for developers.
We looked at the last SteamOS update earlier while tracking Valve's development cycle. That previous release focused on similar balance and stability themes for the handheld community. These updates continue Valve's effort to refine the operating system for daily use.
The updates are now available for users to install on their respective devices. The changes cover both consumer-facing stability fixes and developer tool updates. This release ensures smoother operation for games and system functions on supported hardware.
