SteamOS 3.9.4 Beta was just pushed out by Valve as a fix for multiple stability issues that were breaking the everyday usage of Steam Deck and Steam Machine. The SteamOS 3.9.4 Beta update is important because it fixes proper screenshot resolution and issues with firmware applying that were making things broken for Steam Deck and Steam Machine. This is important if you depend on having a good stable OS for media capture and keeping things up and running.
Valve patches SteamOS 3.9.4 Beta to restore native resolution screenshots and fix firmware issues
SteamOS 3.9.4 beta focuses on the main SteamOS core that Valve supports on all their hardware. It fixes an issue introduced with some 3.9 releases that was causing screenshots to be forced to 720p resolution no matter what the display/game resolution was set to. Valve notes that they "Fixed issue with screenshots being captured at 720p even though the display/game resolution is higher". This is a good fix to make sure the screenshots taken match the resolution of the native display output.
- Version: 3.9.4 Beta
- Screenshot Resolution Fix: Fixed regression causing screenshots to be taken at 720p even when display/game resolution is higher
- Audio Fix: Reduced incidence of audio clicks on 3.5mm output with sensitive earphones/speakers
- Firmware Fix: Fixed issue causing firmware updates to occasionally fail to apply on Steam Machine
- App Display Fix: Fixed regression causing some apps to run behind Steam's loading screen
In the SteamOS 3.9.4 Beta you'll find less audio clicks when listening to 3.5mm audio output (using more sensitive ear phones/speakers). They've also fixed an issue with changing timezone where you couldn't get into Desktop Mode until you rebooted. They also fixed a regression where certain apps were running behind the loading screen for Steam. These are some of the specific input/UI behavior that was broken in betas prior.
In terms of security they've updated certs to revoke certificates for some CAs that have insecure private keys like "4". There are improvements to hibernation in the codebase, though they have it currently disabled on Steam Deck due to some driver issues. On Steam Machine firmware updating now works correctly.
They fixed an issue where it would sometimes fail to apply properly. It's stabilizing the base stuff without any new fancy PM features.
The beta is very much in line with the last SteamOS update which was all about stability and fixing game-specific crashes/fan noise. This one is also all about stability and fixing regressions for the platform. Be sure to update your Steam Deck to fix up your screenshot native resolutions.
Fix up your audio clarity. It's live now if you're running a beta.
