GTA 6 NPCs now react to handheld weapons, forcing players to manage visible firepower. Rockstar confirms November 19 release date with updated AI behavior.

Grand Theft Auto VI is tightening its grip on player behavior, and the changes matter for anyone planning to roleplay as a criminal. Rockstar Games is forcing players to manage their visible firepower more carefully, moving away from the open carry style of the past. This shift raises the stakes for street-level gameplay, as carrying a weapon in your hand now triggers a reaction from the world around you.

Rockstar enforces stricter weapon visibility rules for realistic bystander responses

The update targets the core interaction between players and non-player characters. Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, explained that the new population behavior requires a higher level of sophistication. The team found that previous mechanics no longer fit the visual fidelity and social complexity of the new setting.

In the previous title, players could pull out a shotgun from nowhere without triggering a realistic response from bystanders. That approach does not work in the new game, according to Nelson. The new system distinguishes between how a weapon is held and where it is stored. Carrying a long gun on your back is fine, but holding it in your hand makes people nervous. They will react negatively and start moving away from you.

Players can still carry two concealed pistols at all times without issue. However, carrying heavier firepower now requires using storage options, similar to the system in Red Dead Redemption 2. This change forces a strategic decision about when to draw a weapon. The game is still slated to release on November 19, giving players time to adjust to these new rules of engagement.
