A new study challenges the common belief that playing video games harms teenage brains. Research shows game genre and intent matter more than duration
The research involved 3,854 teenagers between the ages of 12 and 16. The team compared teens with regulated gaming habits against those with internet gaming disorder. They tested logical reasoning, long-term memory, and visuospatial abilities in both groups. The goal was to isolate the impact of gaming style on mental performance.
Teens with gaming addiction made more mistakes during quick decisions under pressure. The study linked dysregulated gaming to weaknesses in logical reasoning and memory. Fast-paced shooters showed the clearest connection to the severity of gaming disorder. RPGs and strategy games, however, promoted logical and verbal skills instead.
Controlled gaming with a clear purpose can have slightly positive effects on cognitive performance. The findings suggest that game genre and intent matter more than duration.
