A fan-made PC port of the Nintendo 64 classic Wave Race 64 now runs on modern hardware, letting players experience the game on widescreen monitors with unlocked frame rates. This unofficial release removes the hardware limits of the original console, giving retro gamers a smoother, higher-resolution version of the water-based racer. Fan project recompiles N64 classic for modern desktops
The project transforms the original MIPS code into C using the N64Recomp tool, then executes it through the N64ModernRuntime. This architecture allows the game to bypass the limitations of traditional emulation by directly translating the original instructions. The build uses RT64 as the primary renderer and RecompFrontend to handle menus and controller input, creating a clean interface for modern peripherals.
Visuals receive a significant upgrade with an HD texture pack that maps 1,828 high-definition images across 1,806 distinct graphics files. Audio assets also see changes, with nine original recordings replaced by Brian Tate to better suit the new runtime environment. The software supports Direct3D 12 on Windows systems and Metal on macOS, ensuring native performance on both major desktop platforms.
The port currently supports only the Wave Race 64 (USA) (Rev A) ROM version, limiting compatibility with other regional releases or revisions. Users must provide their own legally obtained original game ROM file to launch the application, as the port does not include the copyrighted game data. The developer has smoothed object movement between frames to match the display refresh rate, which reduces stuttering on high-Hz monitors.
The latest build, version 0.4.0-macos.3, is available for global download from the official GitHub releases page. This release marks a functional step forward for the unofficial port, offering a stable way to play the title on PC.
