Canonical predicts Ubuntu WSL users will exceed native Linux installations as developers favor Windows for AI and machine learning workflows.

Ubuntu WSL Users May Soon Outpace Native Linux Installations
SOFTWARE AND UPDATES

Ubuntu is shifting its center of gravity from desktops to Windows machines, a change that matters to developers who rely on Linux tools for AI and machine learning work. Canonical leadership now expects the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) user base to overtake the traditional native Ubuntu installation count in the near future. This trend highlights how enterprise Windows environments are increasingly serving as the primary host for Linux development workflows rather than dedicated Linux hardware.

Canonical leadership sees Windows Subsystem for Linux overtaking desktop adoption

Jon Seager, Canonical’s vice president of engineering, attributes this shift to the practical needs of modern software teams. He notes that WSL installation numbers are growing significantly faster than native desktop usage figures over the past year. The platform appeals to professionals who must operate within Windows corporate policies while requiring Linux capabilities for data science and AI tasks.

Canonical has not released current data to confirm if the crossover has already occurred, though the prediction was made several months ago. The company acknowledges that WSL installations may have already caught up with or surpassed native Ubuntu counts based on the trajectory described by Seager. This uncertainty stems from the lack of official metrics rather than a decline in native Linux adoption.

We've been tracking Ubuntu closely — see our earlier coverage on Quarkos 26.04 Linux Release Brings KDE. The broader ecosystem continues to integrate Ubuntu bases into various distributions, reinforcing its role as a foundational layer for Linux development regardless of the host operating system.

Canonical’s internal analysis points to WSL as the dominant environment for Ubuntu users in the coming months. The company continues to support both native Linux desktops and the Windows integration layer as distinct but complementary paths for developers.
