Sony is working to preserve its gaming history. The company is saving source code and development builds for future re-releases. Senior Build Engineer Garrett Fredley shared details about the effort on social media.

Preservation team saves source code

Fredley said the preservation journey is underway and the team does not plan to stop. He noted that sharing the vision with leadership was a meaningful milestone. The work could enable re-releases of classic games.

Near-term improvements may include native PS3 game support instead of streaming. That would be a change from the current PS5 approach, which relies on cloud streaming for PS3 titles.

According to a rumor, the PlayStation 6 will have significantly more robust backwards compatibility than the PS5. Sony has not confirmed that claim. The company has not announced a launch window for the next console.
