Sony CEO Hints at New PlayStation Handheld Beyond Streaming

Sony executives are hinting at a shift in how PlayStation hardware reaches players, sparking fresh speculation about a new portable console. This potential move matters because it could finally replace the current streaming-only limitations for on-the-go gaming. The comments suggest a future where the PlayStation brand expands beyond the living room TV.

Executive comments fuel speculation about native portable gaming

PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino stated that the company plans to deploy future technologies "in various forms and in various places." He emphasized that "pick-up-and-play" experiences are becoming increasingly important for today’s players. These remarks fuel ongoing rumors of a device often referred to as the "PlayStation Vita 2."

Current portable gaming on the PlayStation platform is restricted to the PlayStation Portal, which requires a remote play connection to a home console. The rumored new handheld would likely offer native gaming capabilities rather than relying on streaming. This distinction marks a significant departure from the current hardware ecosystem.

The device is not expected to launch before the PlayStation 6, which industry estimates place no earlier than 2028. Sony has not officially announced a new handheld, and no launch date exists. The company’s current strategy focuses on AI integration for game development rather than immediate hardware releases.

We touched on Sony PlayStation CEO Declares AI Core in our earlier Sony coverage. Nishino’s comments align with a broader strategy to explore flexible hardware deployments. The market now waits for official confirmation of these portable ambitions.
