Sony interactive Entertainment recent PlayStation ad showing Lisa from Spider-Man 2 has some people wondering about the type of publishing Sony is doing. The ad showcases a new game called Kena: Scars of Kosmora. The ad clearly marks it as a Sony interactive entertainment IP.
PlayStation ad lists game as Sony IP despite indie studio status
That could mean it either got bought by the company, or the studio (Ember Lab) itself got bought by Sony. For platform exclusive enthusiasts, this could mean a change in the type of deals that Sony is doing to get third-party content for their ecosystem.
Kena: Scars of Kosmora is an action-adventure narrative-driven game made by the studio Ember Lab. The game is currently planned to come out on PlayStation 5 and PC for the year of 2027. The game is about a young rot keeper who travels into a secret world to bring balance back. The art style of the game and the gameplay have gained attention from those who enjoyed the previous game.
The big question at hand here is where does the ownership of the game lie. In Sony's ad they mark it under their intellectual property rights. This goes against what's been reported and what's public information about Ember Lab being an independent studio. This has caused quite a lot of confusion about whether or not there was a deal made for a proper acquisition.
There's a document that Reddit users have found as a sign of evidence that Ember Lab is in fact still an independent studio and they still hold the rights to the game. But the date of the registration of the document is March 2026. This is clearly the future, meaning that the document may be outdated or non-sense if there was an earlier deal made.
It is unclear what's happening with the game Kena: Scars of Kosmora. It's unclear if Sony snuck away and acquired the rights to the game. Or if it's just a mistake on their ad.
Either way the game is still set for 2027 release on PS5 and PC. The ownership debate doesn't change that. It'll be best to wait for some sort of announcement to confirm the publishing rights status.
