Despite the turbulent year for publisher Electronic Arts, the company has no intention of ending the Battlefield franchise. The company has confirmed that the series isn't being canceled or shut down despite the company dealing with mass layoffs and the closing of BioWare. The reason this news is important is that it ensures players that they can look forward to new content for the current game and a new game coming soon. This makes it clear that the company is focusing on ensuring the survival of one of their major multiplayer IP above all else internally.
Publisher confirms new title development and continued support for current entry
The future for Battlefield is set as Electronic Arts is already in early development for the next game in the series. With Respawn Entertainment and DICE developing new games in the Battlefield universe. Of course, Respawn and DICE are working on a new Star Wars: Battlefront game in addition to the main Battlefield game. This reveals that the publisher is really doubling down on their existing franchises instead of letting them go.
The current main entry in the series, Battlefield 6, just got its 5th season launched. This latest update brings new maps, weapons, and modes to the game. In addition to the new content, the patch also brought some gameplay changes to enhance the player experience. These new additions will help to continue the lifecycle for the 6th mainline entry while the next game is still in early development.
This comes as Electronic Arts is going through a lot of internal changes. They've announced the shutting down of BioWare along with the cancellation of the next Mass Effect game. This resulted in about 400 layoffs across the company.
However, this doesn't mean that the company is just going to let go of their Battlefield brand. Instead, they're continuing to support and bring new things to the current game and focus on the next game's development cycle.
