Samsung is considering two completely different routes for its upcoming foldable flagship smartphone, and which one it picks will probably dictate its overall pricing and form factor options for consumers in the near future. While it's still too early to get a final understanding of what's to come, it looks like there's a chance we're either getting a larger screen option or a budget (spec-light) option.
Samsung weighs larger displays or reduced specs for the next foldable flagship
This move is similar to what we've seen from many other manufacturers as of late. Instead of just sticking to high-end models, they're including both premium and budget options in order to target different segments.
The potential for the Galaxy Z Fold 9 (assuming it's based off of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 from earlier this year – which started at about $1,900) is virtually a guarantee, as far as industry watchers are concerned. But the configuration is where all the real controversy lies. It seems that Samsung may be considering going for a larger screen or, on the other hand, sacrificing some specs to go into a lower price category.
Per a leak from display supply chain sources that leaker Lanzuk brought to Naver, it appears we're first getting a 'Plus' variant that'll presumably feature a substantially larger outer display and inner display. While this certainly would make for more screen real estate, the physical size increase could have a negative effect on ergonomics. Another option Samsung may be considering is a 'FE' variant (industry-wide trend of reducing certain specs for cost-effectiveness but still staying true to the foldable form factor).
It's possible that we'll only see one of these two options, as Samsung wants to clear things up in terms of its premium foldable lineup. If you want the biggest screen size possible, you'll just have to wait for the official announcement to see if Plus is happening or not. But if you're looking for a more value-oriented option, perhaps the FE variant is more up your alley. Of course, this is only if Samsung actually goes for the FE version.
