The long-running co-op shooter PAYDAY 2 just got a major technical overhaul that matters for anyone playing on or handheld PCs. The developers have officially retired the native Linux version of the game, which means Linux users can no longer run the standalone client. This shift forces Linux players to rely on compatibility layers if they want to keep playing, but it also clears the way for a much more efficient game client.

Sidetrack Games modernizes the co-op shooter with a 64-bit engine and in-game communication tools

Sidetrack Games, which has taken over development from the original creators, released this update to modernize the aging title. The core change is a complete engine migration that moves the game from a 32-bit architecture to a 64-bit system. This transition also brings the game up to DirectX 11 rendering standards, which should improve stability and performance across all supported platforms.

The technical changes bring several practical improvements to the daily gameplay experience. The update introduces in-game voice chat, which removes the need for third-party communication tools during heists. It also implements a new compression system that significantly reduces the total game size, freeing up storage space for players who previously had to manage a 90GB installation. Loading times are also noticeably faster with the new engine.

For handheld gamers, the update resolves a major friction point regarding platform support. Even though the native Linux client is gone, the game runs exceptionally well on the using Windows compatibility layers. Testing on the device shows a stable 60 FPS performance at a low 16W power draw on Overkill difficulty, making it a viable option for portable play.
