Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer has no open matchmaking playlist out of the box. The reason this is important, is that you can't opt out of Skill-Based-Matchmaking (SBMM) out of the box. If you are used to an open matchmaking (lobby) style of gaming, then you need to recalibrate your expectations for the first few release dates.
Activision confirms no SBMM-free playlist at launch
The main problem lies with the multiplayer matchmaking in the game. Activision has not made a playlist choice that does not include the skill based matching algorithms. The structure and nature of this setup directly impacts how you are matched up with other players initially.
In technical terms, there is no open matchmaking capability in the game. There is no explicit playlist mode for unranked/open skill-based matchmaking. All this is the case with the multiplayer as it launches on day one.
Similar to the trends we observed with the last update of Modern Warfare 4, balance and stability were key considerations. So it turns out the priority for the launch is skill based matching and not open matchmaking. You should expect a more competitive environment on day one.
Activision has confirmed the Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer launch configuration. There is no open matchmaking playlist or SBMM-free setup. This is what you are looking at for the baseline experience for everyone getting into the multiplayer mode.
