On October 21, 2026, Electronic Arts made the decision to shut down BioWare. With the closure of BioWare, it closes a 30 year history of this premiere RPG studio. It’s the end of an era for all of the fans that have watched this studio since the company was formed in 1996. The closure of BioWare affects the rest of the community in a way, given how much we’ve all held BioWare in high regard for their story-driven games.
Fans create collage of 20 games as studio closes after three decades
BioWare was first formed in 1996 and released Shattered Steel as a start to their presence in the industry. They eventually become a household name with the massive RPG break-out game Baldur’s Gate which changes the game for RPG’s. Some of their notable games that came out during their time include MDK 2, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Jade Empire.
Their period from 2005 to 2014 is what’s typically considered the golden era of BioWare. This is the time when they were at their critical and commercial peak. After this, there was a lot of negativity from the community about the downward trend with games like Mass Effect: Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Not to mention they also have Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood on their list of games that have been released as well.
Currently, fans are trying to pay homage to their history by making collages of all the 20 games they’ve put out from 1996 to 2026. It’s a nice visual representation of all the work they’ve done over the past 3 decades. It’s like a piece of history in the form of all the RPG’s that we’ve experienced.
