Rockstar Games is addressing player concerns about the refueling mechanic in Grand Theft Auto VI, aiming to clarify how the feature impacts the open-world experience. The developer argues that the time required to refuel vehicles is minimal and designed to fit naturally into gameplay rather than interrupting it. This clarification matters to players who worry that frequent stops could disrupt mission pacing or police chases.
Rockstar defends the 10-second pause against fears of mission disruption
The game introduces a fuel system that requires players to monitor their vehicle's fuel levels and visit gas stations to refuel. Unlike previous titles in the series, this mechanic adds a layer of resource management to driving. Gas stations also serve as hubs for vehicle repair and electric vehicle recharging, integrating the fuel system into the broader game economy.
According to a preview of the game, refueling at a gas station takes approximately 10 seconds. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson defended this duration, stating that players "can't complain" about the speed. He noted that the process is fast enough to be considered a brief pause rather than a significant interruption.
Community feedback has previously focused on the potential for refueling to interrupt intense moments, such as missions or chases. Rockstar maintains that the 10-second window is short enough to mitigate these concerns. However, it remains unclear how frequently players will need to refuel during standard gameplay or if the mechanic can be disabled entirely.
