GammaOS Nano brings a PS3- style XMB interface and unified emulation to the TrimUI Brick, Anbernic RG DS, and RG Rotate using reversed PS3 firmware components.

GammaOS Nano Brings PS3-Style XMB Interface to Retro Handhelds
ANDROID HANDHELDS

Gamma has released early details on GammaOS Nano, a custom firmware designed to extend the lifespan of budget retro handhelds. This update matters because it replaces the stock operating systems on devices like the TrimUI Brick with a more versatile platform. Users who own these specific Android-based consoles can now access a wider range of emulation cores and standalone applications. The release signals a shift toward more powerful software solutions for entry-level gaming hardware.

Custom firmware replaces stock OS on TrimUI Brick with XMB navigation

The new firmware targets three specific handheld models: the TrimUI Brick, the Anbernic RG DS, and the RG Rotate. Gamma describes GammaOS Nano as a completely new system rather than a simple skin or modification of existing software. The developer confirmed that the firmware is not RetroArch itself, though it retains the ability to launch RetroArch cores. This distinction allows the system to manage both core-based emulators and standalone game files within a unified environment.

  • Compatibility: TrimUI Brick, Anbernic RG DS, RG Rotate
  • Architecture: Custom firmware using components from reversed engineered PS3 Firmware
  • Interface: XMB (Cross Media Bar)

Under the hood, GammaOS Nano relies on components extracted from reversed engineered PlayStation 3 firmware. This technical foundation supports the implementation of the XMB, or Cross Media Bar, interface. The interface provides a familiar horizontal navigation structure for browsing media and games. Gamma has also published a web demo of the XMB interface to allow users to preview the visual layout before installation.

The developer stated that the project is nearing completion and will arrive soon. Initial testing and visual captures were performed on the TrimUI Brick hardware. The firmware aims to unify the user experience across different handheld manufacturers by standardizing the interface and core management. Buyers looking to maximize the utility of their existing TrimUI or Anbernic devices should monitor for the final release.

The previous iteration focused on balance and stability improvements for the same hardware base. The upcoming Nano release builds on that foundation by introducing a new system architecture and interface.
