Quantic Dream announced on May 20, 2026 that it will discontinue development of Spellcasters Chronicles. The studio stated the game failed to reach a sufficient audience for long-term sustainability in the current market environment. This decision ends an eight-year project led by Guillaume de Fondaumière, David Cage, and Grégorie Diaconu.

French union blames management for catastrophic project failures and impending job losses

The title launched on on February 28, 2026, but reached only 888 concurrent players at its peak according to SteamDB data. Quantic Dream confirmed the servers will remain accessible until June 19, 2026, when they will shut down completely. Players who spent money during the Early Access period can request a full refund.

The French union STJV accused management of catastrophic project management that exhausted the team and led to this outcome. Union representatives argued the studio never questioned the business model or profit strategy over the years. They described the situation as inevitable incompetence rather than an unpredictable market failure.

STJV claims a restructuring plan triggered by the cancellation puts 95 jobs at risk, representing one quarter of Quantic Dream's workforce. The union criticized the project for being planned for a much earlier release despite its originally modest scope.
