Nintendo is dropping breadcrumbs in the upcoming Ocarina of Time remake which suggests a remake of the Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask on the Switch 2. This is important as it hints towards Nintendo having a pipeline of remakes ready for the next console, potentially greatly increasing the selection of titles you'll be able to play on the Switch 2. We've been following The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask closely and we'd recommend checking out our coverage of Nintendo Switch 2 Emulator Lichii Boots Zelda for more on how the community is treating these games.
Design changes and clock mechanics suggest Nintendo is preparing a Switch 2 sequel
The breadcrumbs are in the form of various design and dialog adjustments to specific characters within the Ocarina of Time remake. Specifically, fans have noticed the Happy Mask Salesman now has golden bracelets which are a clear visual indicator of Majoras Mask. Further, the remake has the Skull Kid character speaking about his desire for a face covering, which is directly reflective of the main plot device in the unreleased remake.
Other than specific character design changes, the Ocarina of Time remake also features the clock advancing system which is analogous to the clock mechanism in Majora's Mask. Again, this mechanic similarity suggests Nintendo is using the Ocarina project as a vehicle to test out or hint towards things they want for the next game in the series. This isn't just a visual connection, these changes suggest deeper structural similarities between the two titles.
Nintendo has already confirmed that the Zelda 40th anniversary celebrations are going to be going into 2027 so we know when to expect future updates. Senior VP of Product Development & Publishing Nate Bihldorff recently spoke with Polygon about how Nintendo is going to be addressing old titles vs new projects on the Switch 2. It seems the plan is to strike a balance between the two, meaning remakes like a possible Majora's Mask are probably going to be part of a larger plan to fill out the early launch library for the new console.
While it's seeming that there will be a remake, it's still unconfirmed and so far its a case of fan interpretation as opposed to official confirmation. The Happy Mask Salesman's accessories and Skull Kid dialog can be interpreted as such, but there has been no outright confirmation from Nintendo of a Majora's Mask remake. We'll be keeping an eye on official sources for any solid confirmation of this happening.
