Sony won't include Gran Turismo 7 as part of its PS Plus subscription, showing that they're more concerned with selling it outright. GT 7 remains a cash cow, helping the company make money, rather than acting as a loss-leader for the platform. This means that those who want access to the latest content need to buy the game.
Sony keeps Gran Turismo 7 off PS Plus to protect $840 million in revenue
The racing simulation has remained a hit since its March 2022 release and continues to be a huge money-spinner for Sony Interactive Entertainment. Around the $840 million mark has been the amount made since release according to Alinea Analytics analyst Rhys Elliott's estimates. It's clear that there's a demand for high-quality racing sims on PS5.
Gran Turismo 7 sales have reached 12.7 million copies worldwide per Rhys Elliott's analyst estimates. It maintains around 3 million active players per month and 400,000-700,000 daily players. It's got a solid fanbase which is evident by the ongoing microtransactions and full-price sales.
It beats out its main competition in the form of Microsoft's Forza Motorsport, which has only sold around 1.3 million copies and made $89.9 million. It's second in line when looking at current-gen PlayStation Studios titles, as Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is the highest-grossing at around $1.3 billion. This makes GT 7 the second most lucrative current-gen first-party title.
Sony's unwillingness to add it to PS Plus helps prevent it from cannibalizing the full price game market. It's still a standalone buy for those that love their racing and prefer to own the game rather than play it via subscription. It proves that there's a market for charging higher prices in the niche sim space.
