Xiaomi's Redmi 17 5G promises six years of software updates until 2032 and four major Android upgrades for under $250, extending security support for budget buyers.

Xiaomi's Redmi 17 5G offers an attractive solution for budget-conscious consumers. The device receives a substantial update package, promising support for up to 2032, a total of six years of updates. This means budget-level devices are receiving protection against new threats for far longer than the usual budget devices.

Budget smartphone receives four major Android upgrades and 90-day patch cycles

This means, for budget-level consumers, a hard choice between keeping your wallet full and being secure in the long term. The Redmi 17 5G from Xiaomi closes this gap with a promise of six years of updates.

Redmi 17 5G Software Support

  • Update Duration: 6 years (until 2032)
  • Android Upgrades: 4 major versions (up to Android 20)
  • Update Frequency: Roughly every 90 days
  • Price: Less than US$ 250

The Redmi 17 5G is a 5G-capable smartphone produced by Xiaomi. It's intended for the entry-level segment and focuses on longevity instead of high-end features. It's the kind of device that can offer consumers a good and reliable device without the luxury of premium features.

Xiaomi has made the promise to update the Redmi 17 5G to up to four major Android versions. That means you'll receive updates all the way up to Android 20. They've also committed to delivering security patches and updates every 90 days to keep the system intact.

At under US$ 250, the Redmi 17 5G fits neatly into the budget category for global consumers. With its sub-$250 price and extended update support, it offers a compelling value proposition for budget-conscious consumers looking for long-term reliability.

At this time, it's not clear whether they fulfill the requirements of the new directive set by the EU. That would depend on when the sale of the device will be finished. It's a reflection of how difficult it still is to match corporate support plans with new regulations in the region.

six years for under two hundred and fifty dollars is insane. most flagships do three. this breaks the market.

will the patch cycle hold up on the camera app drivers? i have seen older socs drop support after two years. what happens to the image signal processor code?

the isp driver is usually tied to the kernel. if they keep the same kernel version for six years the driver stays. they just patch the security holes in between.
