If you've been eagerly anticipating a new Helldivers 2 coming out soon then you're out of luck. Arrowhead Game Studios has said that Helldivers 3 isn't in the pipeline any time soon. By doing this they will keep the player base more homogenous for the existing game, as opposed to having players split between two games.
Arrowhead Game Studios dedicates 95% of staff to Helldivers 2 updates
Because if they were to make a Helldivers sequel, that's essentially a restart. A restart where you have to start from scratch. Which messes with all the community progress.
They're putting 95% of all their people towards updating Helldivers 2 right now. Which is a huge amount of resources being pumped into the game and they're treating it like an eternal service much like Lego or Warhammer. CCO Johan Pilestedt says this avoids the problems that come with the more short term live service model.
The industry is basically panicking right now because the usual tricks they've got for retention aren't working. But Arrowhead's in it for the long haul.
A team is also doing a prototype for a new and separate game right now. But it's not Helldivers 3 or a sequel to Helldivers 2 as of now. The focus is on making sure that Helldivers 2 is a lived experience and not a money grab. And the main team is working on ensuring that Helldivers 2 remains alive and interesting to the obsessed.
Because Pilestedt says that the main competitor for Helldivers 3 would be Helldivers 2. It would dilute the experience that Helldivers is all about, if they split the player base. So it's better to just have this one thriving ecosystem than to try and launch a new game. This way the players that are already around can enjoy a game that is stable and growing.
