Activision is currently being bombarded by an uproar of players about Modern Warfare 4. The player base is unhappy with the way the game is matching players and the map layout. This is important because it shows potential for loss of player base if no action is taken. Players are finding it tough to enjoy the fundamental multiplayer aspect of the game based on these current conditions.
Activision faces player exodus risk over matchmaking complaints
The most common problem that players have are tied to the Skill Based Matchmaking (SBMM) that is implemented. Players are saying that the matchmaking is too aggressive and therefore matches are becoming imbalanced and stressful. This change in mechanics is directly affecting the perception of fairness and fun of the game.
In addition to the matchmaking issue, players have been specifically calling out the map design. One player (Thomas Durham III) noted that there are many issues with broken spawns and unplayable maps. These structural issues block players from playing half the maps in the game properly.
It is clear that if Activision doesn't step up quickly, player churn is at risk. Players have been expressing that if these issues continue to exist in the next couple weeks, they are going to stop playing the game. This gives us a good sense of how urgent the need is for dev attention to recover player confidence.
We've been watching Modern Warfare 4. We even discussed previous topics regarding Call of Duty mechanics. However, this current uproar is certainly a step change in perception from general interest to unrest. It emphasizes the need for good game balance responsiveness for retention.
