YouTube comments will support images and GIFs starting November 2026. The update, confirmed via API changes, expands visual engagement on the platform.

SOFTWARE AND UPDATES

YouTube introduces image & GIF comments. Beginning November 2026, comment section posts will include images & GIFs. This update transforms audience engagement with video content, enabling visual commentary in addition to textual. Creators & users have more avenues to show their reactions, all within the same platform.

Visual replies arrive on mobile and web in November

This new feature is implemented as a software update for the YouTube app (mobile) & website. Google has announced this update by adding a new comment image URL field in the revision history of YouTube Data API v3. GIFs will be selected from the dedicated GIF library in-app to guarantee that they are compatible & efficient.

The technology behind this update will introduce images & GIFs as a first step on mobile devices. Voice comments for TV audiences are included in this update as well, providing additional ways to engage. In order to help creators manage the new visual comments more efficiently, they will be provided with custom comment management tools.

A new discovery page & specific community for members only is now available for channel memberships. These features aim to encourage interaction within subscriber communities. There are mixed reviews on Reddit regarding this update, with some users expressing worries that visual comments could result in clutter & an increase in bot activity within the comments.
