Valve has introduced a beta version for the Steam client that focuses on launch speed optimization, but also includes important stability updates. This patch is important as it addresses repeated problems with launch failure of native games and also stops the creation of erroneous error dialogs that often get in the way of the experience. It's meant to provide a smoother experience for people who often jump around applications or even reboot the client often for whatever reason.
Beta patch addresses launch speed, service errors, and Linux stability
It's important to note that this update is specifically for the Steam client software itself, not any individual games. Valve introduced the second wave of launch speed optimization improvements which aims to boost the speed in which the Steam platform loads up. These optimizations are being worked on in addition to a series of bug fixes for specific hardware or input scenarios.
One of the bigger changes is a fix for a Linux specific issue where Vulkan games would become unresponsive when players were jumping around windows with the Alt + Tab key combination. Another change is a regression fix for launch failure of native games installed as 3rd party titles into Steam. Valve also fixed a problem with showing erroneous "Steam Service Error" dialogs when quickly exiting or restarting the app.
Also, another change is that voice chat settings are now kept so that levels for interlocutor's volume don't get reset when you restart the client. There's even a fix in this update for Steam Input for EA Sports College Football 27 to fix control setup issues which was causing problems with controller mappings. No timeframe was mentioned in terms of how long the beta will be available, so it's unclear on when it will be made available.
We had some similar themes of balancing and stability in the last Steam update that we wrote about. This continues with another step forward in ensuring that there are some fixes for input and service error issues. This beta is still available for those who want to opt-in and test it out, but there's no set release date at this time for it to hit the stable branch.
