Google is preparing to launch a fully AI-powered interactive search experience next week. The update replaces traditional link lists with conversational, AI-generated answers and proactive information agents.
New system replaces traditional link lists with conversational answers
The new system builds custom experiences for individual questions. It uses dynamic layouts, interactive visuals, and persistent project spaces that users can return to repeatedly. Google reports that more than 2.5 billion monthly users already use the AI Overviews feature. The conversational search mode has reached 1 billion monthly users.
Liz Reid, Head of Search at Google, explained how the agent system operates. Users can set alerts for specific market movements or other parameters. The agent maps out a monitoring plan and accesses necessary tools like real-time finance data. It tracks changes and sends synthesized updates with relevant links when conditions are met.
TechCrunch notes that these changes will likely further reduce Google referrals to publishers. AI Overviews has already caused declining referral traffic for many sites. Some ad-dependent media operations have closed due to this trend, and the new agent system may worsen the situation.
Google has not confirmed a specific launch date beyond next week. The company has also not detailed how the new agents will handle user privacy or data retention policies.
