A popular SNES emulator for the PSP and PS Vita has received its first update in eight years. The emulator, Snes9xTYL, was revived by a Reddit user known as Bitter_Cry7001. The update brings significant performance improvements and new features.

ROM loading speed improved by 90 percent

ROM loading speed has been improved by 90 percent. Loading a collection of around 1,000 ROMs previously took roughly 20 seconds. The new fork cuts that down to a few seconds. The emulator now supports up to 4,000 ROMs. It also adds Portuguese and Spanish language support. A favorites system using the left trigger has been introduced.

The revived fork was announced on January 1, 2025, and is available globally. The developer shared the news on Reddit.

The Snes9xTYL emulator has been a staple for retro gaming on Sony's handheld consoles. This update breathes new life into the aging hardware. The improvements address long-standing user requests for faster loading and better organization.
