A forgotten SNES prototype from Rare has surfaced online after more than thirty years in storage. This leak offers a rare glimpse into the early development of what would become the Banjo-Kazooie franchise. Gamers interested in the history of 64 classics can now see the game in its earliest form.

Rare's SNES prototype Project Dream leaks online

The leaked files belong to a project codenamed Project Dream, which served as a predecessor to Banjo-Kazooie. The prototype features an isometric viewpoint and pre-rendered sprites, a technical approach distinct from the final N64 release. Players control a protagonist named Edson in this early iteration of the game world.

The leak was uploaded to the Internet Archive by an anonymous user operating under the handle 'FvckAsha&Phil'. The leaker stated that the release was motivated by dissatisfaction with Microsoft's management of Rare during the studio's later years. The files include gameplay footage that highlights the visual style of the SNES-era prototype.

Former Rare composer Grant Kirkhope weighed in on the authenticity of the leak. He confirmed the material appears genuine, stating, 'It looks real to me.' This confirmation adds credibility to the release and connects the prototype directly to the original development team.
