PlayStation 4 emulation on PC just got a major stability boost with the release of shadPS4 version 0.18. This update matters because it resolves critical boot failures and system crashes that previously blocked access to popular titles. Users who struggled with frozen games or unstable performance on newer hardware will find immediate relief in this patch.
Kernel rewrite and red zone protection stabilize emulation on modern hardware
The shadPS4 team has released version 0.18.0 to the public via GitHub. This open-source emulator continues to refine its compatibility layer for Sony's eighth-generation console. The latest release targets specific architectural issues on modern Windows systems and improves graphical rendering for several high-profile games.
The most significant change involves a complete rewrite of the kernel event flag system. The developers state this fix resolves the frequent boot hangs that occurred in Shadow of the Colossus. The team confirmed that the game can now reach its main menus more reliably after this structural adjustment.
Version 0.18 also introduces experimental red zone protection for Windows users. This feature addresses crashes that specifically affected Intel processors from the 12th generation onward. Additional GPU fixes improve shadow rendering in Persona games and correct visual effects in inFAMOUS and Gravity Rush 2.
Performance tests by YouTube user Christo Gevedjov highlight the emulator's growing capabilities. Bloodborne runs at 90 frames per second at 1080p on an Intel Arc 580 paired with a Ryzen 5 7500F. The Order: 1886 achieves a playable 30 frames per second on the same hardware, while P.T. hits a steady 60 frames per second on an Intel Arc B580.
Not all titles run smoothly, however. Driveclub struggles significantly, managing only 14 frames per second at 1080p on the test system. MediEvil reaches 60 frames per second but experiences frequent frame drops below that target. Some users on RTX 5060 Ti hardware report low GPU usage and visual bugs in The Order: 1886 despite high frame rates.
We looked at the last shadPS4 update earlier while tracking emulator development. Several of the same balance and stability themes came up in this new release. The shadPS4 team continues to prioritize core system stability over raw speed improvements for untested titles.
You can download version 0.18.0 directly from the official shadPS4 GitHub releases page. The emulator remains free and open-source for users looking to play PS4 titles on their PCs.
