Square Enix is moving decisively toward a digital-only future, a shift that fundamentally changes how players will acquire and store their games. The publisher reported that over 90% of its game sales are now digital, leaving physical media as a minor fraction of its business. This trend affects everyone from collectors to casual buyers who rely on discs and cartridges for their libraries.
Publisher reports 90% digital sales share in Q1 FY2027 results
The company released these figures as part of its Q1 FY 2027 financial report, covering the period from April 1 to June 30, 2026. During this quarter, Square Enix sold 6.65 million units of downloadable software compared to just 730,000 units of packaged software. The share of physical game sales dropped to 9.9%, down significantly from 18.7% in the previous quarter.
Financial performance remains strong despite the format shift, with net sales of Square Enix HD games rising by 8.8 billion Japanese yen year-over-year. Final Fantasy 14 continues to drive engagement, supported by the recent announcement of the Evercold expansion. These results highlight the financial viability of digital distribution for major AAA publishers.
Physical media is not disappearing entirely, but its role is becoming more specialized. Director Naoki Hamaguchi noted that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation may use a code-in-box format due to cartridge capacity limits. He is considering compromises that offer the advantages of discs while acknowledging the industry's move away from them.
We touched on Final Fantasy 9 remake stalled, Square in our earlier Square enix coverage. The publisher is clearly prioritizing digital sales channels, which simplifies distribution but removes the option for resale or physical archiving. Players should expect fewer physical releases for future major titles.
