Square Enix is shifting its development resources away from the Final Fantasy 9 remake, leaving the project in a state of limbo. This move matters to players who have been waiting for a modernized version of the classic role-playing game, as it signals a long pause rather than a quick release. The studio is prioritizing other projects, which delays any potential launch for fans of the 1999 title.

Project was far along before development halted

The stalled project was originally envisioned as a single, self-contained game rather than a multi-part series. Alex Donaldson, a source familiar with the development, stated that the remake was very far along before it stalled out. He confirmed that the project is no longer moving forward in its current form. This contrasts with the larger scope of Final Fantasy 7: Revelation, which Square Enix is actively developing.

Square Enix is currently focusing its efforts on Final Fantasy 7: Revelation, which has a much broader narrative scope. Previous comments from Final Fantasy 14 Director Naoki Yoshida suggested that remaking older titles might require multiple installments due to their size. The FF9 remake did not follow this multi-part structure, which may have contributed to its difficulty in completion. The studio appears to be favoring projects with clearer, more manageable scopes.

Rumors of the remake's cancellation align with earlier reports from insider NateTheHate. However, the current status is more accurately described as on hold rather than permanently cancelled. Donaldson does not rule out the possibility that the FF9 project could remerge in the future. Some artwork intended for box art suggests the project had significant visual assets completed. Players should treat the cancellation rumors with caution until official confirmation arrives.
