European buyers of Logitech wireless mice will face heavier peripherals and higher prices starting in February 2027. This shift results from new EU battery legislation that mandates user-replaceable power sources. The change directly impacts the weight and cost structure of the company's gaming hardware in the region.

European buyers face heavier mice and higher costs starting in February 2027

Logitech plans to replace its current lightweight soft-pack lithium batteries with hard-pack units in rigid casings for the European market. The company argues that its current soft-pack design is unsafe for users to replace themselves. This safety concern has historically prevented the brand from offering user-serviceable batteries in other regions.

  • Battery Type (EU): Hard-pack lithium batteries in rigid casing
  • Battery Type (Non-EU): Lightweight soft-pack lithium batteries
  • EU Compliance Date: February 2027

The new hard-pack batteries require more robust casing to prevent punctures, which adds significant weight to the mice. Logitech confirmed that this regulatory compliance will also increase manufacturing costs for the European units. The company will sell certified replacement batteries alongside the new mice to facilitate the required user swaps.

Robin Piispanen, Logitech's head of gaming, questioned the practicality of the mandate for typical consumers. He noted that most users buying mice in the $50 to $100 range are unlikely to open their devices to swap batteries. The company also maintains that it does not sell replacement rubber grips or switches due to similar safety concerns.

Logitech will continue to ship non-EU markets with its existing lightweight soft-pack battery design. The European compliance strategy creates a distinct hardware variant that prioritizes regulatory adherence over weight savings. The company is preparing to meet the February 2027 deadline with these modified products.
