Saber Interactive is refining its development strategy to balance major internal titles with support for independent game studios. This approach matters because it signals a shift toward sustainable, focused production cycles rather than chasing expansive, high-risk projects. The studio aims to keep decision-making agile despite its growing size, which helps maintain creative energy across diverse game genres.

Studio prioritizes agile decision-making and focused scope
The company recently separated from Embracer Group in 2024, returning operational control to co-founder Matthew Karch's Beacon Interactive. This corporate restructuring allows Saber to pursue a publishing model that leverages its internal expertise while supporting external indie developers. The studio views partnerships with smaller teams as a way to diversify its portfolio without overextending its core resources.
Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits emphasizes that the studio focuses on core gameplay loops and avoids over-scoping projects. He states, "We have a group of folks that are really passionate about making great games – and we do focus on what's important in a game, and we scope it correctly. Our games are not over scope, but they're a heck of a lot of fun." This philosophy stems from past experiences with indie titles like The Knightling and Bus Bound, which provided valuable learning opportunities for the team.
Saber Interactive employs approximately 3,500 people but strives to maintain small-team decision-making structures to stay energetic. Willits notes, "We're 3,500 people, and we work on a lot of games, but we try to stay 'small,' you know, and energetic. We try to stay small in our decision making by being agile and working on the games that we love, and focusing on what makes those games fun." This structure supports their strategy of working on games they love while keeping scope manageable.
