Sony is exploring a new way to make controller buttons respond to gameplay. A patent filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization describes buttons that change hardness in real time. The technology could let players feel different textures through the controller.

Patent details magneto viscoelastic elastomer technology
The patent focuses on the PlayStation DualSense controller. It uses a magneto viscoelastic elastomer to adjust button resistance. This material can change its stiffness when exposed to a magnetic field.
According to the patent, the controller hardens buttons when a character touches a hard surface or moves on solid ground. The system can also soften buttons for other in-game actions. The goal is to provide more immersive haptic feedback beyond standard vibration.

The patent description states: "The operating device can dynamically change the hardness of the contact portion in response to external control commands." It also notes that the technology could improve grip and accessibility for players. However, the patent is currently only a concept with no guarantee of becoming a real product.
