The original soundtrack for Doom has been added to the US Library of Congress National Recording Registry. It is one of 25 recordings selected from over 3,000 nominations for the Class of 2026. The registry now holds 700 titles.

Soundtrack composed before game levels

The soundtrack was composed by Bobby Prince using MIDI technology. Prince completed the music before any of the game's levels were finished. He wrote on his blog that none of the games he worked on had completed levels before he had already completed the music. The music drew influence from heavy metal, techno, and ambient music.

The Doom soundtrack joins a collection of recordings recognized for their cultural significance. The Library of Congress selects recordings annually to preserve them as part of America's audio heritage. This marks a rare honor for a video game soundtrack.

id Software has not commented on the induction. The exact date of the ceremony has not been announced.
