You can now play the 1993 classic Doom on a Canon EOS 550D DSLR camera, a feat that turns a vintage photography tool into a retro gaming device. This unofficial port demonstrates that the game’s simple engine can operate on hardware capable of basic input and output. The project is of interest to hardware enthusiasts and retro gaming fans who appreciate running legacy software on unconventional devices. The project illustrates the adaptability of open-source firmware and the lasting popularity of id Software’s first-person shooter.

Unofficial port uses camera buttons and built-in speaker

The port was developed by Bas Lichtjaar, known online as lauris-nl, who adapted the game to run on the Canon EOS 550D. This camera is also sold as the Rebel T2i in North America and the EOS Kiss X4 in Japan. The developer shared footage of the working game on X, noting that the classic title has been unofficially ported to this specific DSLR model. The project relies on the Magic Lantern open-source firmware add-on to enable the necessary system access.

Running the game requires a precise setup involving two specific firmware versions. You must install the Magic Lantern 550D.109 build onto an SD card. The camera itself must be running official firmware version 1.0.9. The game utilizes the camera’s 720×480 LCD screen for visuals and the built-in speaker for audio. Lichtjaar explicitly warned users not to install this binary on any other camera model or firmware version.

Gameplay controls map directly to the camera’s physical interface. You use the D-pad for movement and the Set button to fire your weapon. The rear wheel allows you to switch between available weapons. The port supports saving and loading game states as well as loading multiple WAD files. This configuration makes the experience fully playable despite the unconventional input method.

This experiment shows the potential for adapting retro games through hardware modification. The Canon EOS 550D serves as a functional, albeit niche, platform for Doom. The project remains an unofficial port intended for enthusiasts willing to follow strict installation steps. The project reflects the long-term viability of the game and the extensibility of the camera's firmware.
