Bungie has announced that Marathon Season Two, titled Nightfall, will launch globally on June 2. This update introduces two new experimental player versus environment modes to the game. The studio aims to test new mechanics that could eventually become permanent features in the core game loop.

Two new experimental PvE modes launch globally on June 2

The first new mode operates as a PvE-lite offering with light player versus player elements. The second mode provides a pure PvE experience where players complete objectives cooperatively. Bungie plans to continue running experimental queues beyond these initial offerings to evaluate other potential mechanics.

Season Three will focus on revising the early-game experience and adding a new Runner shell. Season Four intends to build more depth into the game's extraction loop. Season Five aims to bring the player versus player versus environment extraction world together.

The game has struggled with player retention, raising questions about whether a wider audience will actively receive this content. Bungie continues to test the waters around these new modes with the potential for them to become part of the core gameplay.
