Modder PunishedWolfOG has released Gears of War Redux, a comprehensive overhaul for the original PC version of the shooter. This update brings modern multiplayer features and technical improvements that were absent from the game's initial launch. Players can now access content from later entries in the franchise without upgrading to the newer Reloaded Edition.

Modder adds Horde mode, split-screen co-op, and ultra-wide support to classic shooter

The project targets the classic 2006 release rather than the recent remaster, ensuring compatibility with older hardware configurations. It supports both DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 graphics APIs to accommodate different system preferences. The mod also introduces native support for ultra-wide displays, including 21:9 and 32:9 aspect ratios with proper field of view adjustments.

A major addition is the inclusion of several multiplayer modes previously unavailable in the original client. Users can now play Horde mode, Horde+, King of the Hill, Guardian, and Team Deathmatch. The update also implements split-screen local co-op for both the campaign and all newly added multiplayer modes on a single machine.

The mod operates through its own launcher that downloads necessary game files directly to the user's system. This approach bypasses the need for an existing installation of the base game, simplifying the setup process for new users. The package is currently available for global download, though its long-term presence on distribution platforms remains uncertain.
