Firaxis Games released update 1.4.1 to add hotseat multiplayer mode, allowing multiple players to share a single device. The addition of hotseat multiplayer responds to community demand for local cooperative play. The update also introduces a new map type that changes how players approach territory expansion and naval strategy.

The new Archipelago map type uses Voronoi generation to create distinct landmasses surrounded by water. The new Archipelago map type emphasizes naval navigation and resource management on individual islands. Firaxis developed the Archipelago map to offer a distinct strategic experience compared to standard continental maps. Strategic planning now requires attention to sea lanes and the proximity of islands during expansion.

Firaxis also adjusted the Happiness stat system to make government choices more impactful. The system now uses a five-stage scale ranging from angry to ecstatic. The revised Happiness system ensures that governance choices have more immediate and significant impacts on city stability. Additionally, celebrations are now harder to earn and last for shorter durations. Changes to celebrations and the Happiness system aim to create a more balanced and challenging simulation.

Alongside the free update, Firaxis launched the Brush and Blade Collection DLC for $29.99. This paid content pack includes new Japanese factions and leaders for players to command. The DLC is available immediately for those who wish to expand their roster of playable civilizations. Firaxis has confirmed that Korean factions, including Goryeo and Joseon, along with Admiral Yi Sun-Sin, will arrive in September. Early reactions to the DLC have been mixed, with some players citing the price as a concern.

The 1.4.1 update is available now for all players on supported platforms. The Brush and Blade Collection DLC is also available for purchase at the listed global price.
