HANDHELD GAMING

Anbernic appears to have quietly reduced the RAM on its RG34XXSP handheld gaming device. A teardown of a new unit reveals Samsung K4E4E324EE EGCF chips, confirming the hardware now ships with just 512MB of LPDDR3 memory. This represents a significant downgrade from the original specification that included 2GB of RAM.

Teardown confirms memory reduction alongside new color variant release

The RG34XXSP is part of Anbernic's lineup of retro handhelds designed for playing classic games. The device targets enthusiasts who want to play older titles on portable hardware. The recent teardown shows that the internal memory configuration has changed alongside a new Metallic Blue color variant release.

The RAM reduction directly impacts how the system handles newer and more demanding retro software. PortMaster games, which are known for requiring substantial memory resources, need more than 1GB of RAM to run properly. The current 512MB specification falls short of those requirements, potentially causing performance issues or incompatibility with certain titles.

Custom firmware developers face additional hurdles due to the hardware changes. Reports indicate that screen panels on the new Metallic Blue units come from a different manufacturer and use different drivers. This forces users who want to swap shells to replace the entire casing rather than just swapping the main board, complicating DIY modifications.

Anbernic's official product page still lists outdated specifications that do not reflect the current hardware reality. The discrepancy between the listed specs and the actual teardown findings suggests the company has not updated its public information. This leaves buyers with conflicting information about what they are actually purchasing.
