CONSOLES

Sony has announced that you can trade-in your used PS5 consoles to get up to $400 for your hardware. This is important because it's a way for you to offset the cost of next-gen hardware during this period of demand spiking for Grand Theft Auto 6. For gamers who want to upgrade, this gives them the opportunity to trade-in old hardware and get credit for it instead of just storing it away.

Back Market handles logistics for console resale ahead of major game release

You can do it via Back Market who is handling the logistics for this after partnering up back in 2024. You trade-in your devices via the platform and depending on the console model and its condition, you'll get a certain payout. You can do it for the PS5 Standard, PS5 Digital Edition, and the new PS5 Pro.

Your payout will be different depending on the grade of the console and the number of accessories you include. For instance, if you're trading in a PS5 Standard console which is Grade 0 and you have two or more controllers, you could get up to the estimated $400 maximum. Grades below that and missing accessories will affect your final payout. Digital edition will generally have a lower payout than the console with the disc drive.

The trade-in program is coming as we're having high demand for PS5 hardware. That demand is hitting as we approach the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 and people are interested in what's available. We've been following along with hardware and we previously covered things like the update for Hell Let Loose.

This is a good way for people to have a process of getting something back for old consoles. Microsoft also had similar trade-in deals for and S to help control the supply of hardware in the market. Sony's trade-in here is an indication of their approach to the secondary market as the console generation progresses.

Does the $400 max apply to the base PS5 or just the Pro model with accessories included

It is the standard PS5. You need two controllers for the full amount. The Pro pays less without them.
