Anbernic shows off the gameplay of the new clamshell RG DDS. The new clamshell handheld will be ideal for retro gaming aficionados as it has an ambitious set of goals for emulation. They're shooting to provide PS4 generation games in a handheld form factor.

Anbernic RG DDS Clamshell Handheld Features PS4 Emulation and 3DS Upscaling
Something outside of the normal expectations of what current handhelds can achieve. Now, for anyone out there wanting a retro gaming handheld, they've got something to point to with a late 2026 release window.
Specifications
- RAM: 8GB / 12GB
- Storage: 128GB / 256GB
- Display Output: USB-C DisplayPort 1080p
- Form Factor: Clamshell handheld
The RG DDS isn't the dual screen we've heard about in initial reports. Instead, the RG DDS is a clamshell handheld. Anbernic seems to be billing this one as a dedicated emulation device rather than a PC handheld device. The clamshell form factor lets them streamline the device, but retain all the gaming goodness.
Specifically, the device features the Bachata S4 which will let you emulate PS4 games. On that note, the device can keep Transformers: Devastation going at 53-60 FPS. It also has a 1080p DisplayPort output over USB-C so you can use it on external displays (via USB-C). You can even use AR Glasses for 3D (stereoscopic 3D) with this output.
On top of that, Anbernic wants you to know about the good emulator performance for Nintendo's older hardware. They're touting AzaharPlus support for 3DS emulation. They can get 3x resolution for 3DS games like Nintendogs + Cats.
You'll have stylus and microphone support as well. For DS emulation, you can get 5x resolution for DS games like Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. This is all part of their efforts to give you quality retro gaming experiences.
The base RG DDS will cost $284.99 with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. You can also get a higher-end model with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage for $349.99. They're open for pre-orders on both models. Anbernic says that they will gradually begin shipping on December 10, 2026.

53 to 60 frames is solid for PS4 emulation. This Bachata S4 chip needs more attention.
Does the 12GB RAM model actually help with heavier PS4 titles or is the 8GB enough for most games?
The 12GB variant provides better headroom for texture streaming. It reduces stutter in open world scenes that hit the memory limit.
I am more interested in the 3DS upscaling. Getting Nintendogs to run at 3x resolution with stylus support is a dream feature.
December 2026 shipping is incredibly late for a clamshell handheld. By then the market will have moved on.
The $285 base price is fair for the specs. I will wait for the shipping date to see if they actually deliver.
