has released its RTX Path Tracing software update (1.9.0). There is a 20% speed increase from the last version (1.8.1). This is relevant for developers of real-time ray tracing applications because it means less compute is needed to keep your frame rate up. Essentially this means you can get a smoother rendering experience for complex scenes without any loss in quality.

NVIDIA releases RTX Path Tracing 1.9.0 update with 20% performance gains and Windows on Arm support

The RTX Path Tracing tool is a baseline library for developers who want to start integrating path tracing into their engine. It offers both DirectX 12 and Vulkan APIs allowing for more choice in implementing your rendering pipeline. This release from NVIDIA is more of a 'clean slate' for the next path tracer integration rather than a patch to an old version.

  • Version: 1.9.0
  • Performance Improvement: 20%
  • Previous Version: 1.8.1
  • OS Support: Windows on Arm
  • API Support: DirectX 12, Vulkan

Amongst other things, there have been significant improvements to CPU frame times for large instance scenes. There is also less memory used when it comes to Opacity Micromaps. This is useful for more dense scenes to help with resource use. The async compute queue also now handles Ray Reconstruction inputs in parallel so you can get a more streamlined rendering process.

Version 1.9.0 also brings Windows Arm support. This means you can start testing things out on devices such as RTX Spark laptops. So this increases the potential hardware pool available to developers interested in running path tracing on non-x86 platforms. This release is available worldwide right now to download.

Previously, we covered some other NVIDIA news that was related to DLSS optimizations on rival hardware. This article touched on developers pushing the boundaries of NVIDIA rendering tech on other GPU platforms. This time the focus is more on native performance increases for supported NVIDIA platforms.
