Arrowhead Game Studios has moved away from a focus on developing a new game for the time being, committing all of their efforts to Helldivers 2. It's as if they're on hold with making the third game. This news is big for Helldivers fans waiting on the sequel, as it shows that they're just gonna keep working on it for the foreseeable future instead of splitting their player base. Arrowhead thinks it's better to have a great community behind a game than to release something new that might cannibalize their existing one.
Arrowhead Game Studios commits nearly all resources to Helldivers 2 live-service updates
Creative Director Johan Pilestedt mentioned how the industry is currently dealing with a lot of problems related to old live-service systems. When it comes to doing a sequel, he says it would only make sense if it's a different enough game to live alongside the original game. They're worried that doing another sequel would lead to internal competition and weaken the community for Helldivers 2.
About 95% of the staff at Arrowhead are now focused on making Helldivers 2 even better. They have a small team that's trying out new ideas by prototyping another game. It's a minimal experiment that lets them try new things while not distracting from the main live-service game.
Pilestedt says that with a community-driven content game, you don't have the pressure to make the next game ASAP. Instead of the usual way of rapidly churning out sequels to keep the money coming in, they're focused on the health and activity of their existing player base.
