Nothing has begun rolling out Nothing OS 5.0 to the general public, marking the first major software update built on Android 17 for its smartphones. This release matters because it introduces a suite of over 80 changes to the interface, performance, and artificial intelligence capabilities that define the user experience. Buyers should note that the update is currently available only for the Nothing Phone (3), with other models scheduled for later in the year.
The update brings transparent widgets, AI tools, and Android 17 features to the Nothing Phone 3
The update transforms the visual language of the operating system through a redesigned Home Screen and new lock screen elements. Widgets and the search bar now feature transparent backgrounds, while an adaptive color system pulls hues directly from the user's wallpaper. A new Micrographics clock face on the Lock Screen consolidates the date, time, weather, and upcoming meetings into a single view.
Nothing claims the update improves everyday smoothness by optimizing touch response, background app retention, and resource management. The company has integrated three new AI tools: Essential Voice for transcription, Smart Collections for organizing saved content, and Essential Apps Builder for creating custom applications. These features aim to streamline how users interact with their data and device functions.
Under the hood, Nothing OS 5.0 inherits several key Android 17 features, including separate panels for notifications and quick settings. The update also brings cross-platform Quick Share support, enhanced privacy controls, and a redesigned Recents screen. These changes align the Nothing interface more closely with the latest Android standards while maintaining its distinct aesthetic.
Availability for the update starts immediately for the Nothing Phone (3) on a global basis. The Phone (4a) series and Phone (3a) series are scheduled to receive the update in November. Other compatible models are expected to get the update later, though specific dates have not yet been confirmed.
This release follows the previous Nothing OS update, which also focused on balancing stability with new features. That earlier update left several older devices, including the Nothing Phone 1, Phone 2, and CMF Phone 1, without access to the new software. The current rollout confirms that Nothing is prioritizing its newer hardware for the latest Android 17 foundation.
